International bhangramuffin star APACHE INDIAN to headline
RBC desifEST
British vocalist Apache Indian (born Steven Kapur) has been added to the already stellar line up of artists at the 2008 RBC desiFEST happening at Yonge and Dundas Square on Saturday, May 31.
Apache Indian has been recognised for linking different cultures through music, and becoming the first true International Asian Pop Artist. He has linked traditional Asian sounds with influences from mainstream Pop, Reggae and Hip Hop.
He introduced bhangra raggamuffin also known as bhangramuffin - to the World with his first album “No Reservations” (produced by Simon & Diamond, Phil Chill, Robert Livingston, Bobby Digital and Sly Dunbar) in 1993. It was followed by “Make Way for the Indian” (produced by Sly & Robbie, The Press, Mafia & Fluxy, Pandit Dinesh and Chris Lane), which featured rapper Tim Dog and spawned the massive hit “Boomshackalak”. “Real People” (produced by Harjinder Noparai) proved to be his most experimental album and also featured more Indian elements than the other albums. “Karma”, his latest album, was a return to more traditional forms of reggae. It featured Luciano, Boy George as well as Mafia & Fluxy.
Apache has enjoyed over a decade of success including winning various awards from the Asian and Reggae Industries, 7 British top 40 hits including Boomshakalack, 4 Brit Award nominations, a Mercury Music nomination, an Ivor Norvello Award and the International Dance Award in 1995.
He was also the first Asian artist to have his very own show on Radio One and presented MTV Reggae Sound System from Kingston, Jamaica. He has also presented ’Apache Goes Indian’ for Channel 4 from India.
Apache has toured the world extensively over the past decade.
On Saturday, May 31 Toronto’s Yonge-Dundas Square will be transformed into a colourful South Asian bazaar featuring a 12-hour music festival.
