Shining The Light On Attawapiskat- for our future.

A picture speaks a million words and when it involves kids, you can’t take your eyes of it. The first thing that struck me when I saw this is why do children in Canada have to go through this?
Are we not a country that is helping rebuild schools in Afghanistan, Africa, Haiti and other countries and we are denying the basic fundamental right to education to the very people from whom we have borrowed this land!
Read about it here and if you want to write a letter to Minister Chuck Strahl, click here .
What has been appalling to me is the attitude and answers from the Conservatives to this issues. Callous and nonchalant towards the sufferings of these Children who are yearning for education so that they can make a decent living in their own land.
I am very passionate about education for children and am the co founder of Asha for Education, Canada, a global organization with 75 chapters in four continents that focuses on bringing Socio-economic change in India through education and empowerment. I have spent the last decade on projects at the grass root level on rural empowerment and education and have learned quite a bit on the issue of right to basic education.
The situation of these Children are no better than those in developing countries. In India, we are addressing the issue of rural areas through satellite Internet based learning, but most importantly it is happening because there is a will to do it even among the corrupt politicians.
It is shocking that in Canada the Conservatives are looking for excuses to deny basic education to these Children. Is it fair? Take a moment and write a letter of support to these children because this is our issue and we need to step up to the plate for our children. NOW!
Thanks to Cam for bringing it to our attention.

Vijay: glad to see that libloggers are finally taking up the issue of Attawapiskat. I haven’t posted a partisan response on other liblogs because at least they acknowledged that this isn’t the first generation of kids in this community that have been left without a school. Liberal governments ignored them for years. So I won’t belabour the point but I will make it.

We all like to see politicians act like magicians and make this world a perfect place, but it aint going to happen. I dont rate politicians simply by what they have done and what not, but where their heart lies and what are their genuine interet.
i dont think if the NDP comes they will be able to solve all the problems either.
So one needs to engage the government in power towards solutions, the challenge is that you can do that with the Liberals, but next to impossbile with the Tories whose priorities start and end at getting a majority!

Please, if you’d read anything about this you’d know the problems go back 30 years now… Weren’t the Liberals in power for most of that time? So what makes you think that all of a sudden they’re going to come through on this issue after dragging their feet worse than the Tories? You seem to think the NDP can do nothing but they’re the ones who have the press and bloggers (including Liberals [who on all their blogs seem to gloss over the fact that the Charlie Angus of the NDP brought this up in the first place]/Tories/Greens and New Democrats) talking about this issue. Your faith is misplaced if you think the Grits will do anything that isn’t directly related to trying to win a majority government.
